District Newsletter
Greetings again from your District Governor!
Hi Lions, I have had a couple of serious emails from International President Dr Patti Hill. First, she was talking about 1.5. For many years we have bragged about global membership of 1.4 million members. Dr. Hill’s goal is to achieve membership of 1.5 million members by 2027, four years from now. This means we need to visit with neighbors, friends, new people and tell them your Lion story, what you do, what your club does and how they may fit in. Find out their interests which may result in a new club project which will benefit your community. Be honest when they ask questions, be realistic when you respond, highway cleanup may benefit the community, but it is not glamorous or clean work. We are able to learn new ways of doing things.
In her most recent email Dr Hill was emphasizing the benefits of working with LCIF, seeking grants which will provide positive outcomes for your community. One example is found in Humboldt. An LCIF grant allowed improvements which now permit handicapped and elderly individuals to visit and enjoy a park.
In visiting clubs, I learned many things. It has been said ”Lions are the best kept secret” as my visits have revealed to me time after time. When I visit clubs, I stay for the regular club meeting. I learn what projects and fundraising events have been held. Lion involvement is revealed.
I see how much Lions are involved in each community. And how the community responds to Lions activities. Surprising and yet sad, we do not hear about these wonderful things happening and the service provided in these communities. Several examples:
Falls City: held a raffle to raise funds for scholarships
Byron: provided funds to help repair a park used by youth
Hordville: Mowing grass in an old rural cemetery
Utica: Dinner and auction to raise funds to purchase an ambulance
What are we able to do in our larger cities, perhaps in a smaller neighborhood which needs a boost? We should learn from each other, and this will only happen when we share our stories.
The other District Governors may have had similar experiences.
Until next time, be informative Lions to the people in our communities and share our love of Lionism.
In Lionism,
DG Evelyn Springer
